Hot Tub Size Guide: How Many Seats Do You Really Need?

A spa that’s undersized feels cramped, yet an oversized shell costs more to heat, fills slowly, and can dominate your patio. Because volume drives operating costs and structural load, the right footprint protects both comfort and budget. In this article, our in-house hot tub specialists break down everything you should consider to size your spa right.

Questions You Need to Answer Before You Shop

  • People count: How many will soak at once? Family, friends, or just the two of you?
  • Purpose: Hydrotherapy, relaxation, or weekend entertaining?
  • Placement: Concrete pad, reinforced deck, or built-in?
  • Access path: Can a 90-inch shell clear your side gate, or is a 72-inch model safer?

Answering these questions first narrows the field to hot tubs that truly fit your lifestyle.

Seat Count & Dimensions Cheat Sheet

  • 2 – 3 seats: 175 – 201 cm long (69 – 79 in.), 760 – 1 140 L (200 – 300 gal.) — ideal for couples and balconies.
  • 4 – 5 seats: 198 – 213 cm square (78 – 84 in.), 1 040 – 1 420 L (275 – 375 gal.) — the most popular family size.
  • 6 – 7 seats: 213 – 239 cm long (84 – 94 in.), 1 330 – 1 800 L (350 – 475 gal.) — room for bigger families or small gatherings.
  • 8 + seats: 239 – 274 cm long (94 – 108 in.), 1 890 L + (500 gal.+) — built for parties or therapeutic classes.

“Advertised seats” usually feel comfortable with one fewer adult, so wet test before you buy, if you can.

Size Beyond Seats: Jet Layout & Therapy Zones

Two spas with identical capacities can feel very different. Lounger shells trade one upright seat for a full-body recline, while bench layouts maximize head count. Make sure each regular user gets at least one therapy zone that aligns jets with their height and problem areas.

Space & Installation Considerations

Leave a 3-ft service corridor for cover lifters, filters, and the GFCI disconnect. Ontario’s public-spa code calls for 0.9 m of deck on three sides. Mirroring that in a private yard simplifies maintenance and keeps technicians happy. Ensure the base supports 90 lb/ft² for a full seven-person tub and that a 240 V, 40–60 A circuit reaches the equipment pack.

Cost & Energy Implications

Every extra 100 gal. needs roughly 0.85 kWh to heat from 20 °C to 38 °C, so bigger shells cost more to run. A premium insulated cover and full-foam cabinet can offset the difference: in Oakville’s climate, a high-efficiency six-seater may add less than $10 a month over a comparable four-seater.
