Maintaining Your Hot Tub Cover Through the Winter

Winter hot tub coverYour hot tub cover is really taking a beating this winter. It’s freezing, it’s warm, it’s raining, snowing, hailing, and freezing rain.

And that’s just on the outside.

The cover is stretching and bending every time you remove it and set it to the side during a soak, unless you have a proper hot tub cover remover like:

You might have already noticed the damage on your hot tub cover accumulating over the last month or so. As the cover degrades, you start running into problems like:

  • Waterlogging.
  • Heat loss (a costly problem for most hot tub owners).
  • Bacteria.

But never fear. Here’s how to take care of your hot tub cover using hot tub cover cleaners you can find around the house, and what you should do with a waterlogged hot tub cover.

Hot tub cover maintenance.

Hot tub cover maintenance is easy and effective. You just have to do it!

  • Use a simple hot tub cover cleaner like diluted bleach to clean the underside of the hot tub cover, including the edges stretching down around the side of the hot tub.
  • Don’t allow snow or ice to accumulate on the cover. The extreme cold above and heat below put extra stress on the insulating foam core, wearing it out.

That’s it! Those two tasks are enough to keep your hot tub cover in good shape for a long time.

What not to do.

Some hot tub owners opt to save a little money by not installing a hot tub cover remover. This is totally fine, as long as you take care removing and storing the cover when you’re in the tub.

If you don’t have a cover remover, make sure you:

  • Remove the hot tub lid with at least 2 people. This helps limit the twisting and stretching motion that degrades the cover when it’s handled roughly by a single person.
  • Place the lid flat, on a clean surface. Rocks and twigs can tear holes in the waterproof cover, allowing condensation to enter the insulating foam and leading to a ruined, waterlogged hot tub cover.

What if my cover gets waterlogged?

You have a few options here.

  • Replace the cover. This is the fastest way to get your hot tub back to normal.
  • Replace the foam core. With many hot tub covers, you can remove the waterproof cover, measure the foam and purchase a replacement size.
  • Dry out the foam. This will take a long time, and you’ll have to apply a good mildew inhibitor to make sure your foam doesn’t become a toxic mess, but it’s the most affordable.
