Game Guide: Types of Poker and DartBoard Games

Having a game room in your home can provide you and your family with hours upon hours of entertainment, not to mention the parties and get-togethers. And while there is a multitude of possibilities when it comes to creating a game room in your home, two games that should never be left off your list are poker and darts. A poker table and a dartboard don’t take up much space, but the variety of games you can play with just those two accessories is limitless.

Fun Poker Variations

In basic stud poker, you need at least two players and each one is dealt five cards. Each player will then determine how strong a hand they have and wager their chips based on that decision. The player who bets the most wins unless another player is willing to match the bet. In that case, they show their cards and all the chips go to the best hand.

This is a time-tested card game, but there are many other types of poker that add a little

excitement and variety to the mix. Some of the most popular include:

  • Texas Hold’em
  • Seven-card Stud
  • Omaha
  • Pineapple and Crazy Pineapple
  • Razz
  • 2-7 Triple Draw
  • Omaha Hi-Lo

Dart Board Baseball

Any number of players can get into this game, but two players or two teams of a few players each is the most fun. The game is played in innings, just like real baseball, with the objective being to hit the number on the dartboard that corresponds to the current inning. Each player throws his three darts and a hit in the single section is scored as one point, in the double section it’s two and triple section it’s three. Once everyone has thrown, it’s time to move onto the next inning and aim for the 2 section of the board.

Shanghai

Shanghai is a dart game that can have as many players as you like, so it’s good for larger gatherings. When it’s your turn, you throw at the numbers from 1 to 7 in sequence, trying to score as many points as possible. As an example, at the start of the game each player will throw their three darts at number one, and then keep track of the score. After everyone has had a turn at one, you’ll throw at number two, and so on up to seven. The score is counted as the number on the dartboard you are trying to hit. If you hit all three on the first turn, each one is worth one point for a total of three. On the seventh, your total could be 21 points. If on any turn, you hit the single, double and triple of the current number, you’ve scored a Shanghai and win automatically.

Killer

Killer is another dartboard game that can be played with any number of players, but three or more tends to be the most fun. To start, each player throws a dart with her wrong hand and whatever number it lands on is your number. If you miss entirely, keep trying until you hit one.

Once that’s accomplished, you switch to your good hand and take turns trying to hit the double of your own number. When you get it you’re known as a killer and you get a ‘K’ after your name on the scoreboard. The killer gets to start aiming for doubles of her opponent’s numbers. Every player starts with three lives, but you lose one each time a killer hits your double. The game keeps going until only one player has any lives left.

This is just a small sample of the fun you can have in a home game room. If you’d like to find out how we can help you take your game room to the next level, get in touch with us at Oakville Home Leisure for all of your game room needs.
