Games to Play on a Pool Table

Have you ever thought of using your pool table for something other than pool? You might be surprised at what else you can do. While billiards is a fun way to spend time with family and friends, especially as the weather starts to cool down, there are many different pool table games out there.

Here are our favorite pool table games for couples, groups and for kids.

Pool Table Games for Groups

Golf Billiards

Number of players:  Golf billiards can be played two or more players, without having to double up in teams.

Object: The object of the game is to be the first person to sink their ball into all six pockets.

Equipment: A standard game of eight-ball, cue sticks, a cue ball, fifteen object balls and a billiard table.

Rules:

  1. Each pocket is given a number designation, clockwise from 1 to 6.
  2. Each player should choose one of the numbered balls to use for the whole game.
  3. The shooter starts by placing their ball on the foot spot.
  4. Then, they place the cue ball in the area behind the head string on the billiards table (i.e. the “kitchen”).
  5. The shooter begins by attempting to sink their ball in the first pocket.
  6. If they successfully sink the ball, they may attempt the second hole and so on.
  7. If they miss, the next shooter takes a turn.
  8. Each player begins their first turn by shooting the cue ball from the “kitchen” but after that it must be shot from wherever it lands.
  9. Balls must be pocketed in order from 1 to 6.
  10. Every time a player gets a foul, it costs them points – you can choose the penalty before the game starts.
  11. The player who ends the game by pocketing the ball in the 6 hole, wins a pre-determined amount of points.
  12. The player with the most points wins.

Baseball Billiards

Number of Players: Unlimited. This game takes some time to play. It is also a good choice for players who are new to pool as it will help them get experience shooting.

Object: Players have 9 innings to score as many points as they can.

Equipment: Rack of 21 balls, pool cues.

Rules:

  1. Points are earned during each inning by knocking in as many balls as you can before missing or scratching.
  2. Each ball holds the same amount of points as its face value number.
  3. Before sinking a ball, it must be called in its intended pocket.
  4. If multiple balls are pocketed in one shot, the shooter receives the total amount of points from all of the balls added together.
  5. Players shoot all nine innings in a row.

Pool Table Games for Kids:

Skipping the Cue

You may need a different pool table game for kids, as holding a cue and shooting successfully is difficult for them given their size. Skipping the cue is a great game for them to try.

To play skipping the cue, complete the break for the kids and then allow them to shoot the object ball, without using the cue ball, directly into the pocket. This is harder than it sounds for kids and will give them the opportunity to get used to holding a pool cue. Before you know it, they’ll be ready to take you on in a traditional game.
