How to Use the Kit Included with Your Beachcomber Hot Tub

Beachcomber Hot Tub owners receive a 3 piece test kit. In order to maintain the ideal healthy balance in your spa, you should master how to use it!

  • Comparator
  • Orthotolidine
  • Phenol Red

Comparator

This small, dual-compartment vial is used to measure the pH (on the right side) and the amount of active sanitizer of your water (on the left side).

In this device, you will utilize the different test materials to determine if your water needs additional treatment.

Orthotolidine

Orthotolodine, or OTO, is a substance that is used in for chemical analysis to determine the amount of chlorine or bromine present in your hot tub. In order to test for chlorine levels, you collect hot tub water in the vial and add the indicated amount of drops to the water. The water will change colour, and the colour will indicate the level of sanitizer.

Maintaining the correct level of sanitizer keeps your water healthy to use.

Phenol Red

A hot tub’s pH should ideally remain between 7.2 to 7.6, in order to maintain a comfortable and healthy environment. To put this into perspective, the pH of your skin on average is about 7.2.

Phenol red is used to measure the acidity of the water. Similarly to testing with OTO, you fill the side of the vial with hot tub water, and add 5 drops of phenol red to it. Again, the colour the solution turns will indicate the pH levels, and will help you to determine the course of action to take.

To lower the pH, you can add Beachcomber pH Minus, and to increase the pH level, add Beachcomber Resist.

Since Care Free is a lower chlorine system, measuring the active sanitizer is a more delicate process. The Care Free test kit includes two bottles, each used to measure sanitizer levels using different reagents.

The goal with this Beachcomber exclusive program is to maintain a chlorine level of 3-5ppm.
