You want to spend more time outdoors this summer, but spending more time outdoors also, unfortunately, means spending more time under the unknowable gaze of prying eyes.

What we mean is…the neighbours are probably creeping on you.

But you don’t have to retreat to the basement just yet.

Instead, make your outdoor living space more private this summer with these practical tips.

Patio umbrellasPatio umbrellas are perfect for privacy.

These aren’t your traditional patio umbrellas.

Modern patio umbrellas might be all you need to make your deck more private. Some are up to 13 feet across.

Patio umbrellas are perfect for subdivisions where large, mature trees are sparse and homes are 2+ stories tall.

Build a living wall.

If the fence surrounding your property doesn’t provide enough privacy, you can add a living wall around the fringe of the deck.

Some large flower planters and tall reeds can obscure the view of your deck from 2nd floor windows in surrounding homes.

You can also fill the planters with coniferous trees (plenty will go on sale at your Home Depot through the summer) to maintain your outdoor privacy through the year.

Play the long game.

Plant some fast growing trees around the periphery of your property and wait for them to beef up over the next few years.

With these fast growing trees, you can have a natural privacy wall in a few years.

Build a wall.

You can border any outdoor living space with a tasteful wall on one or two sides.

This will box in part the area, taking away the viewing angle from neighbouring houses.

It’s like an outdoor privacy panel, but better looking.

You can add lattice and weave vines to up the privacy factor.

Frame the deck and hang some plants.

Patio privacy tips
One option is to use grounded flower planters.

Another is to build a coastal-themed, beam-frame around the upper reaches of the deck and incorporate some hanging baskets.

Hanging baskets won’t give 100% privacy, but they are enough to obstruct the view. The bonus is they make your deck more inviting to the people you actually want there.

Build a pergola.

Take the frame one step further and opt for a full blown pergola.

A pergola allows all kinds of other privacy options.

A pergola is also the precursor to a more complete outdoor living space.

An outdoor dining table is just the start.

Your pergola can house a full patio furniture set or an outdoor kitchen, or both!

Your outdoor living space should be as comfortable as you want, and privacy is a big part of that.
