The History of Beachcomber Hot Tubs

There are millions of companies in the world today, many of which have been around for decades. But while most of these companies have undergone major changes during their histories to accommodate shifting values that help fatten their own bottom lines, there are a handful of companies that remain dedicated to the principles on which they were founded. Beachcomber Hot Tubs is one of those companies.

Although Beachcomber Hot Tubs first opened its doors on Valentine’s Day in 1978 in the farming village of Surrey, B.C., the company’s roots reach back many years before, when Beachcomber cofounder Keith Scott began working for his family’s restaurant. Working beside his parents, Keith learned the value of good customer service in a truly tangible way. Those memories of working together to serve customers and provide a top-quality product formed the basis of Beachcomber Hot Tubs’ original vision, and today, those goals and values continue to drive the business forward.

Joined by his wife Judy, the couple worked to create hot tubs offering unique designs, high-quality craftsmanship and user-friendly features to take hot tubbing to the next level of comfort and pleasure. Determined to be industry innovators, Keith and Judy offered a brand training session only a year after opening their doors to help retail establishments understand and effectively promote the beachcomber brand and product line. The next year, the pair initiated the industry’s first North American toll-free number for customer service questions and issues, and they also introduced their highly popular line of Beachcomber water care products under the brand name “Purity.”

Innovative designs and customer-friendly solutions continue to define the Beachcomber brand, and during its 34-year history, the Beachcomber team introduced a host of products and style modifications that helped keep their tubs at the forefront of the industry. Among these: an outside power source designed to provide full-cavity insulation for superior energy efficiency; interchangeable jets allowing customers to design their own configurations for massage comfort; the gravity floor drain to allow all the tub’s water using a typical garden hose; the beachcomber Energy Saver management System, one of the industry’s first computerized equipment management systems; and integrated molded handgrips for additional safety.

In 1996, Beachcomber took its brand global, signing its first international distribution agreement with a European retailer; today, the Beachcomber line is sold in 50 countries. In the same year, the company launched one of the industry’s first websites, promoting the Beachcomber philosophy and mission as well as providing product information for customers worldwide.

Online ordering soon followed as the company continued to modify its existing line and introduce new models to satisfy emerging markets and evolving customer needs. While many modifications have been aimed at improving comfort and convenience for hot tub users, Beachcomber has also focused on design and equipment modifications to make their units as energy efficient as possible. In 2009, those efforts were rewarded when the company passed stringent quality testing conducted by the California Polytechnic Institute. Following those tests, the Beachcomber brand emerged with top honors, and the institute announced the Beachcomber tubs use less energy than the industry spa by an average of 16%, and up to 46% of the 25 companies approved with the California Energy Commission (CEC).

At Beachcomber, staying true to the founding values and principles is what’s kept the company focused on its overall mission and what has allowed the company to enjoy continued growth and popularity. And while no one can see into the future, as long as there’s room in the world for companies that understand the value of excellence in product design and customer service, Beachcomber will continue to thrive.
